1940's hair using heated rollers

Research -

To start my search off i decided to look at a variety of youtube videos of tutorials on how to create a 1940'shairstyle. i have listed below my three favourites:

1)
A Judy Garland inspired 1940's day time look from the Wizard of Oz. created by Leanna Fury.

1940's hairstyles include ups's and peek-a-boo bangs. Many women have their own version of the updo. If the hair is shoulder length or longer the up do is easy to create. This up-do hairstyle is great for when you are having a bad hair day. All this hairstyle requires is a paddle brush, comb, a hair elastic and hair grips.

The Peek-a-Boo Bang -
The peek-a-boo hairstyle became famous due to 1940's starlet Veronica Lake. This hairstyle is super stylish and never fails to go out of fashion. To create this style all you have to do is wash the hair until it is only semi damp. You then part your hair on one side, you must do this to create the peek-a-boo effect over one eye.

Using a one inch curling iron you curl small sections of the hair beginning at the op. You then pin the curl into place using a bobby pin. Once you have pinned each curl into place you leave until the hair is cool. Once your hair is cooled down remove all bobby pins. Lastly using your finger tips you brush out the curls to make your curls loose and soft. To secure the wav over the eye you can use a bobby in to secure and place the wave over one eye.

1940's pin curls -

You can create many 1940's hairstyles with simple tools such as a curling iron and many hair grips. this hairstyle was probably the most stylish and iconic hairstyle of this era. To create this hairstyle you're going to section small pieces of the hair and wind it around your finger. Once the curls is around dyer finger you're going to gently remover the curl from your finger and secure the curl onto the head using hair grips making sure each curl is smooth. Before going to bed women would use a head scarf to wrap around the head to keep the curls secured for a couple of hours. Once the curls are ready you can gently remove the hair grips and finger comb the hair letting the curls fall loose to create a sexy feel.

Celebrities wearing 1940's hairstyles -

Many celebrities to this day wear 1940's hairstyles. Some of these famous celebrities include actress, model and artist Dita Von Teese who would choose the very glamorous 1940'sfinger waves to wear with a stylish fashionable gown.

Famous musician Gwen Stephanie has been seen stepped out in the 40's reverse rolls. She also wears the 1940's finger waves and Veronica Lakes styles.

Katy Perry, known for her pop music and fashion has been seen at the 2009 Grammy Awards and the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards wearing her slick black hair in 1940's sexy waves and victory curls. Both of these styles are great if you are going for a glamorous look.

Victory curls -

In class we were taught how to create curls using heated rollers and victory curl onto wigs.

How to:
1) Heat up the rollers and handle with care as they are very hot on the fingers
2) Section the hair into small sections
3) The larger the curl the larger you want your roller to be. (I used the red and blue ones)
4)Smoothly wrap around the roller with a section of hair using your sectioning brush to capture any flyaway which need help tucking in and do this is brickwork format
5) Use hairspray to keep the hair into place
6) Once the rollers are cooled down remove the grips and let the hair down
7) Brush the hair out and back comb to crate the shape you want your curls to be
8) Finally, to create the victory curls you use your sectioning brush to keep the hair smooth and roll the hair outwards into a roll and pin into place using hair grips.

Below is my final outcome of the victory curls -

I loved creating this hairstyle and i feel my victory curls were successful. The hardest part of this hairstyle i found was using the heated rollers as i found it challenging to make sure no fly-a-way hairs came loose and to make sure everything was tucked under the roller to produce a successful wave. I felt it was much easier using a real head rather than a wigs as the hair is much more practical however found it easier to section the hair of wigs as you could follow the lines of the netting to create even sections.
