Evaluation

Final Evaluation!

Throughout the first months of Wig work and Postiche we were taught how to create a hairstyle from each iconic period from the 1900's. We were also taught how to apply and style the wig ready for our assessment. I developed my final idea's through my research. We learnt how to crate these looks by using curling wands and using the brickwork method of heated rollers and understanding which colour roller for each curl. The larger the curl the larger the roller you want such as blue and red. The Smaller the curl the smaller the roller you are going to want to use such as white to achieve a tighter curl. Researching helps me understand the genre and what the hairstyles of each area include and the correct way to achieve the look you want and how you can style it. My research came from the internet books and many covers of women magazines such as vogue. The aspects of studies that i wished i had explored further are creating my own unique style and experimenting with each genre and the hairstyles of the time. I have faced many difficulties throughout this term but feel i have overcome them successfully. At the beginning i found applying the heated rollers very difficult however through time and practise i found them quite simple and easy to apply. Another difficulty i faced was in my first assessment when the hair just flopped from setting the wig. However overcame this by thinking fast and creating a new hairstyle. I also was able to set my wig for my second assessment which came out much better. My final assessments i chose the 1940’s era as i had seen many photographs of my grandma’s hair from this period in old photo albums. Overall i am happy with the way my assessments and final images have came out despite and feel they are recognised into the 1940’s period. However i next time i would make sure get a lot more practice in time for my assessment to make sure everything goes smoothly and i am confident in what i need to do to achieve.

Assessment 2 - Contemporary outcome

The curls have worked! For this design i decided to create two braids starting from the side of the head that go down across the back of the head into a pony tail with the ends of the hair curled. I created a curl at the top of the head which also resemble the era of the 1940's. Overall i am happy with the way this hair assessment has came out as i have learnt the skills of blocking, setting a wig and creating hairstyles onto a acrylic wig. The hair is smooth and shiny with an overall feel to the hair. I decided to add a bow to the side pony tail to add some colour and a lovely finish to the look.

Assessment 1 - Historical Outcome

Assessment 1 - Historical Outcome

Despite the difficulty i had with the curls not coming out to plan, i did try my best to still reach 1940's hairstyle. Below are a few images of my final assessment. I decided to do an up do as i couldn't really do much to the hair whilst down. Overall i am happy with the glossiness of the hair as the 1940's hair was very slick and perfectly shaped. Improvements for next time would defiantly be practise with setting the wig to not have a re-occuring problem for next time as i would like to include curls into my designs and not give up. However i feel with a lot more practice would have given me a much better outcome. Overall i am happy that i didn't let my disaster overcome my assessment and pushed myself through to create another design.

Disaster!

My Assessment Disaster! And how i overcome it

Soooo, i had a little, well i say a little.. a HUGE disaster when it came to my first assessment for wig work. The Historical Assessment. To prepare the hair of the wigs you can't use a lot of heat onto the hair otherwise the hair will fizzle and will be ruined and very hard to work with so you have to put the hair into non heated rollers and steam the hair twice for half an hour and wait for the hair to set to create a curl. Although this was my first time ever doing the steam i thought i had done this correctly and well however when it came to my assessment and time to tae out the rollers to steam the hair the hair just flopped. No curl was there to work with at all and the hair just went to its original shape and style.  So i had to think on the spot a quick action plan as i wasn't able to us my design as it included curls unfortunately as this hairstyle was pretty much impossible to do. From this i learnt to always have a back up plan.

It was time to put my thinking cap on. Luckily i had done a reasonable amount of research during the 1940'speriod and researched some of the popular hairstyles of this period. After a few minutes looking back on my research i found a technique i could use that didn't require much or any heat. This was Pin curling! For this hairstyle all you needed was some water spray to make the hair smooth and slick, hair grips to secure the hair into place, your fingers to wind up the curl and lastly some hairspray to hold the hair. Hallelujah!

I found creating a pinterest board very useful when creating my designs as i found myself to already having an idea in my head of what i would like my hairstyle to look like. I find looking at images very useful as i can see what i would like to include in my design and what i don't like.  I created a interest board for my historical assessment and desided to do it again for my contemporary assessment.

I started my 1940's Assessment Research historical by gathering a variety of images from Pinterest  I chose very carefully to only include images that i thought would help me with my design. These images all reflect onto my personal designs i want to include big loose curls and pin curls for my final piece.

I have chosen 1940's to be my era for my assessment as i loved creating the big soft curls and creating pin curls around the face.

1950's

1950's

Research -

Right before the 1950's was the word war 2, followed by rationing, and a time of relative prosperity. Disposable income combined with an increase in mass media encouraged the intake from of fashion.

During the 1950's new hair products had been released, including the 'one step colours'. one step colours were designed to allow the women to apply dye in a simple easy way without any difficulty in their own home.

Influences of the 1950's include:
Movie stars and mass media -

During this period mass media was one of the main influences during the 1950's with many new releases of music, films, advertisements and television which all had a huge impact during this period.

Popular films stars  of this time include Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren, Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor and Doris Day. These films stars influenced many of the latest hairstyles. Others such as Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield each had their own influential trademark look.

Audrey Hepburn  -

Almost anyone from the present day would have heard of Audrey Hepburn and know she is a fashion icon just from her films. Audrey Hepburn had a strong sense of fashion and style which captured the imaginations of millions of women which continues to have an impact. Audrey Hepburn was tall and slim with a pixie styled hair cut which emphasised her cheekbone structure and her big dark eyes which many of her fans looked up to. Audrey is the embodiment of glamour. When you think of Audrey hep burns hair you think of two distinctive hairstyles. One being the massive 'pineapple' undo hairstyle she sported at the beginning of the film Breakfast at Tiffany's and the other being the classy, glamorous pixie cut which she wore daily. There are many youtube tutorials to show you how to create both hairstyles and can be seen on many celebrities now a days.

Doris Day -

Doris Day sported many crisp blonde hairstyles with her hair itself giving of a synthetic doll like texture which were luminous which equal manufactured colour tones. Her hair was so Hollywood however also so housewife/good girl. Doris's hair had many changes over the decades however one thing stayed the same which was that she remained blonde, cute and fresh with her luminous essence with fetching waves and contrivances in the right places.

Marilyn Monroe  -

Marilyn monroe supported Hollywood retro waves. This hairstyle became part of her image and sexy appeal. Marilyn moonrise curls were one of her most prominent features, the part that pulled her appealing image together. glamour waves are just in style now as the were in the 1950's. Famous celebrities such as Paris Hilton and Christina Aguilera have been seen wearing this hairstyle. Retro styled glamour enhanced round faces rather than small, oval ones. This hairstyle goes well with a red lip and a black eyeliner.

Jayne Mansfield -

Jayne Mansfield was the epitome of the blonde bombshell. Jayne was one of the iconic pinups of this era and was a dream girl of Hollywood. Her Beauty inspired beauty junkies and makeup mavens to this day. Her look was all about big hair and a full face of makeup. Her brows framed her face, with soft blush on the cheeks to showcase her cheekbones. Just like Marilyn Monroe except much heavier.

Television -
Whilst movies and the actors were still very influential the television was the next big thing. Many people were devoting their free time to stay in and watch the television. This therefore had a huge influence on the way people saw themselves and the world around them.

Hairdressers -
Hairdressers were still making their mark during this period. creating different styles for their clients and helping popularise fashion styles. The prominent hairdresser for the Hollywood movie industry was Sydney Guilaroff who was the first hairdresser to get a screen credit for his work. Since the early 1930's, Guilaroff had worked on many hair during films. His stuff was iconic therefore Grace Kelly chose him to style her hair for the 1956 wedding to Prince Rainer of Monaco.

Music -
Music had a huge influence on teenagers, especially when rock and roll rocketed into the charts during the mid 50's. Rock and roll didn't just define the 1950's teenager but influenced attitudes, fashion, hair and lifestyle. It divided the young and old generations however brought black and white audiences together. Teenagers became recognised demographic in the 1950's. Having less pressure to grow up as quickly as their parents, this meant they could dedicate more time to leisure and had money to spend. Th hair companies had noticed this therefore producing products geared towards the teen market.

Hairstyles during the 1950's-

The Italian Hairstyle
The popular Italian hairstyle emerged in the early 1950's predominantly from the stars of the Italian Movies. Actresses such as Gina Lollobrigida and Sophia Loren had the short, shaggy, yet cultured hairstyle featuring waves, soft curls and fluffy kiss curls.

Curled and waved short hair
Short hair was popular with the young and old and could be worn in a variety of ways. The shorter styles were seen to be quite straight and flat on the crown area with curls and waves around the mid length to the ends of the hair. during the end of the decade the hair was worn with more of a lift and volume. The hair was getting ready for the introduction to the modern bouffant and beehive style.

Pageboy or brushed under bob
This popular hairstyle from the 1950's could be seen on various lengths from a bob to shoulder length. The hair was sleek and smooth, with possibly a slight wave at the front of the face or at the sides. The ends of the hairs were always tucked under formed into a soft roll.

My final outcome -

In this lesson we were taught how to create waves and then how to style it into an up do using a head scarf. Overall i am very pleased with my final outcome and believe the accessory left a nice finish to the look. I would love to create this style onto myself or a model to see what it would look like on an actual persons hair. This style is very glamorous and stylish and i feel can be worn during the day or dressed u going out. I will definitely need to try this look out as i love wearing my hair in a quiff daily!

How to i listed below:

How to:
1) Heat the rollers or curling wand
2) Section the hair into small sections and begin curling away from the face
3) Once the whole head is curled, back comb some pieces to create lift and volume.
4) Create a quiff at the front back combing the front section of hair
5) Twist the front section of the hair and push forward to create lift and pin into place.
6) Gently bring the hair from the sides and bring to the middle and pin into place
7) Wrap around the fabric around the bottom ends of the hair ad tie at the top of the head
8) Secure the fabric with bobby pins to prevent the fabric from falling
9) Finish off with some hairspray and styling mousse to shine and hold.

Applying my 1940's wig to myself

Applying my 1940's wig to myself -

In this lesson we were taught how to apply a wig onto a model. Which is a useful skill is you were a makeup artist in theatre or film as you need to make quick hair changes and wigs will be the easier option as you can prepare the wig before the show. In my previous blog post i went through how to create this style and now you're going to see my wig placed on myself.

How to apply a lace wig -

1)To apply a wig you're going to want to either create pin curls secured in to place using bobby pins across the whole of the head to create a flat surface or by creating two braids at each side of the head and bring the tail up across the head.

2) You are then going to place a wig cap over either the braids or pin curls

3) Using your sectioning bush, brush any excess hair falling over the face, side of the head and nape of the neck and tuck the hairs into the cap.

4) Grab your wig and get your model to hold the front section of the wig by the place half way down the forehead

5) Place the wig over the cap making sure the wig is even onto the head

6) Pin the wig onto place to keep the wig secure on the head to last several hours

7) Lastly, glue the lace at the front of the wig using matte mastix glue. Push back the lace and use tiny drips of glue at the sides. Wait for the glue to become sticky and pull the lace into position using a damp cloth to spread the glue over the lace.

How to remove a lace wig -

1) Grab a brush and apply matrix remover to the lace working from the edges of the lace inwards until the lace begins to remove and lift itself from the skin very gently.

2) Once the lace is fully removed check there isn't any excess left on the skin. if so using a cotton bud  and matrix remover gently brush of any excess

3) Remove any hair grips attaching the wig to the head

4) Lift the wig off starting from the nape of the neck and gently lifting from the sides pulling and lifting the wig up off of the head

5) Lastly remove the net any any hair grips left from the models hair.

Below i have linked a youtube video to show you which i found useful

The final outcome -

Below is my final outcome of the wig on myself. I am pleased with they way my outcome has came put as i feel it looks natural for wig. I need to work on my glueing and actually putting on the wig fully to make sure the wig is secure. I loved seeing what the blonde colour looked on me as i have never seen my hair any other colour as i have never dyed it or used wigs before. Therefore, would love to experiment with a variety of different colours, textures, lengths, styles and shapes.
